The Gardens

The Gardens and the Woodlands

The two hectare garden surrounds Ballyboy House. To the south there are many different garden areas, or 'rooms', overlooking the river Tar and the ruins of Ballyboy Castle. There is a scree garden, an oasis garden, a walled garden etc. Other areas of the garden features herbaceous borders, a fountain and pergola with stunning views of the Knockmealdown Mountains and the famous Vee Pass. A pathway meanders to a walled area where a large collection of shrubs and trees flourish.

The north facing 'front lawn' has many island beds with a large array of shrubs, perennials, roses, grasses and trees—including handkerchief, tulip, judas and many others. The Viburnum walk leads to another world where nature is at its best—the lake is home to water hens and wild duck etc.

A new Laburnum arch has recently been planted. From here you can enjoy the splendid views of the Galty Mountains and stroll along the woodland walks which amount to 75 acres of native hardwoods.

This magical country garden will appeal to any plant lover as it offers a variety of styles, garden designs and woodland flora. There is a mix of formal and informal areas offering something for every season and provides many moments to relax, appreciate the wildlife, the peace and the tranquility.

Recently, a very large 'mug' has appeared in the gardens behind Ballyboy House. On closer inspection, small children may discover a door in this mug. This can be opened to find inside a most unusual playhouse.
